This big bull was not the largest, but he sure knew how to guard what was his. If one of the cows moved just a few paces from him, he was right on her. This was taken in the fields at Ponca, Arkansas.
The Boss Bull Elk E20071010 231
This is the largest bull elk that I have seen in the fields of Ponca, Arkansas. I usually pack my Canon 5D with my Canon EF 400mm 1:2.8 lens with a 2x extender, in my old jeep, without the doors, by the way. I like to be able to stop and shoot without getting out of my vehicle if I see a good shot. I usually pack my Canon 20D with a smaller lens for those kinds of shots. The 400mm is so big, I have to tripod the lens with a steel tripod. I am glad it has an image stablizer on it, because when you see a big bull like this one, coming up out of the woods, you will be shaking.
Mama Elk and Calf E20071010 187
It is so neat to be able to see a cow elk taking care of her little calf. We are all alike, human and beast, in so many ways. This was taken in the late afternoon in the fields of Ponca, Arkansas. Usually the fields won’t fill up except in the eary morning or the late afternoon.
Regal and Proud Bull Elk E20071010 044
A Bull Elk, standing at attention is a magnificent thing to see. The lighting was just right in the shot to be able to see the light tips on his antlers.
Bull Elk and Cows E181
The fields of Ponca, Arkansas will fill up in the morning and evening with Bulls and Cows. Usually October-November is the season to see the bulls in action.
Bull Elk E049
This Bull Elk is huge. You can see where he came through the woods and weeds. He has grass hung on his antlers. Taken in fields of Ponca, Arkansas with a Canon 5D with a Canon Lens EF 400mm 1:2.8 with a 2x extender.
Bull Elk and Cow EP 121
Bull Elk and his mate. He’s after her and he’s very persistent. This was taken in the fall in Ponca, Arkansas.
Bull Elk Closing IN EP104
I love this picture. It was taken in the fields in Ponca, Arkansas. The entire field can be full of cows and the big bull will go for one cow. She may not always be willing to cooperate, but that doesn’t keep him from trying. They were so close, I had to take my 2x extender off my Canon EF 400mm lens.
Bull Elk and Cow Closeup EP 101
The perfect shot of a Bull Elk and Cow. Both ate standing at attention. They were very close to me, so I was able to get a great shot using my Canon 5D with my Canon EF 400mm lens 1:2.8 with Image Stablizer.
Bull Elk Closeup EP 085
This is one of my closeup collection of Bull Elks of Arkansas. Shot with a Canon 5D camera, with a Canon EF 400mm lens 1:2.8 with an image stabilizer.
Bull Elk Closeup EP 082
This bull elk is looking straight at me. It’s almost like he is saying to me, “Okay, you’ve been out here every day for two weeks, do you want me to pose for you? Well that’s what I’ll do. I’ll stand still and look straight at you. Now be quick at it.” My Canon 5D was a perfect camera for this. The Canon EF 400mm 1:2.8 lens was almost too much for this picture, but it sure does capture the expressions.
Bull ELk Closeup EP 077
This Elk picture is part of my collection of Closeup Elks of Arkansas. Everyone can take a picture, but the whole trick to getting a good picture is to catch the attitude or the feeling of the subject. I love this one.
